Waxing…

Is it painful? Absolutely!
Is it worth it? Absolutely!

For the past 11 years I make a visit to my local nail salon to get my face waxed approximately every 2-3 weeks.  I remember my first time doing my eyebrows myself at home…it was a DISASTER! I took hair from the top of my eyebrows instead of the bottom, so for several weeks I walked around looking like Uncle Fester’s secret love child. After 11 years of waxing, I’d consider myself somewhat of an expert…. right?  I have 4 important tips for those of you who may be new to waxing, or just don’t do it that often. Here we go….

1.   DON’T SHAVE IN BETWEEN WAXING.
Shaving in between waxing trips can result in uneven growth of your hair, especially when you shave close to your wax appointment. It will result in hairs growing back too soon after your wax is done, increasing your trips to the wax salon.

2.   WAIT AS LONG AS YOU CAN.
I prefer to wait approximately 2-3 between wax sessions. It is normally 3 weeks, but sometimes 2 weeks if I have an event to go to. I prefer this because I like my brows to look full and neat. The state in which your brows enter the salon is the starting point for the technician. If you continually go in too soon you will start to see your brows shrink in size over time. With brows there is a fine balance, too thin or too bushy is not a good look. So pace yourself, everybody is different.

3.   BABY YOUR SKIN.
For 24-48 hours before and after waxing you have to treat your skin gently.
For this time frame DON’T:

·        Use any type of retinol product, refrain from using it for at least 2-3 days before and after waxing.
·        Don’t shave before or after because it can create significant irritation.
·        Don’t use any AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)/BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids).
·        Don’t use and harsh physical exfoliants. It will be too abrasive on freshly waxed skin and will cause damage.

4.   TALK ABOUT IT
Always tell the technician the look that you are going for, otherwise they will do it how they like it. I always tell them that I want it to look natural/ full.  This results in them just cleaning up around my brows, and if I want them to go thinner in a certain area I let them know afterwards. If you don’t like the results, let the technician know. Also ask questions regarding their hygienic regulations. Double dipping the spatula used for gathering wax is a big NO NO! If your salon does this, I suggest finding a new establishment for your waxing services.

  1. Holy cow, your before and after is amazing! If that doesn't convince people to wax their eyebrows I don't know what will, haha.
